Gah, isn't she gorgeous?!
That's my sister-in-law, Kaylan. To know her at all is to know her deep love for her "critters" as she calls them. She loves her horses (and her dogs) like siblings, literally lighting up when she talks about them. I mean, it makes sense. These guys have been with her almost her entire life. And I guess they kind of were like siblings. She has spent time with them every day for decades and they have been a source of peace and calm whenever life gets crazy for her. Even as we were taking pictures, she couldn't stop saying, "Isn't he the best?" and "Oh my gosh, I just love him so much." Kaylan is patient, loving, kind, tender, and an excellent listener. Each of these qualities shines brightest when she is in her element, with her horses.
Because of an incredible and very well-suited new job opportunity, Kaylan is moving and also rearranging the living situation of her animals. She has wanted photos with them for years, but there was a new sense of urgency after she accepted this position.
This was no small operation. First of all, the two Belgians are 8 feet tall standing straight. To give you an idea of their size, Kaylan is almost six feet tall in boots and they still tower over her. Corralling these beasts was a family affair. My father- and mother-in-law had to help get all four of them positioned and behaving for our group shot. And while Kaylan was focused on looking like a beautiful model, the rest of the family was making whistling noises behind my camera to get the horses to look at me. I wish we had a video of it because it was kind-of hilarious.
My in-laws live in a gorgeous town outside of Denver where the light always seems to be golden and the weather is always lovely. I'm ashamed to say this is the first time I've taken photos at their property, but I can absolutely say that it won't be the last.
Kaylan, thank you for letting me photograph your precious animals. I hope I did your love for them justice. Also, thanks for looking like a beautiful model. It's really gonna pad this here portfolio.
